Is A Feeding Tube A Bride’s Best Friend?
It makes sense that every
bride wants
to look her best on her wedding day. But
some
brides-to-be are going to extreme measures to lose weight.
They’re using what’s called the K-E Diet, which involves running a
feeding tube through their nose and subsisting on an 800 calorie
liquid diet until they reach their target weight. The diet promises
to help dieters lose 20 pounds in just 10 days. (For comparison,
most doctors recommend around 2,000 calories a day for the average
woman.)
In March,
Jessica
Schnaider, 41, of Surfside, Florida, was preparing to shop for
a wedding gown by doing just this: she spent eight days on a
feeding tube. The diet, under a doctor’s supervision, provided her
800 calories while she went about her business, with a tube in her
nose.
800 Calories Of Protein And Fat Dripped Into The Stomach
From
ABCnews:
“I don’t have all of the time on the planet just to focus an hour
and a half a day to exercise, so I came to the doctor, I saw the
diet, and I said, ‘You know what, why not,’” said Schnaider.
“Your hunger and appetite go away completely, so patients are
absolutely not hungry at all for the whole 10 days,” said Dr.
Oliver Di Pietro.
A feeding tube is ins erted in to the dieter’s nose and runs a
slow, constant drip of a protein and fat mixture into their
stomachs for a total of 800 calories. Because Schnaider only wanted
to lose 10 pounds, she only needed the feeding tube in for 8
days.
Body fat is burned through a process called ketosis, which leaves
muscle intact.
“I’m happy because those 10 pounds went off fast. Without hunger,”
said Schnaider.
Tube Diet Popular In Italy And Spain
While the tube diet is fairly unknown in this
country,
it
has been popular for years in Italy and Spain, where it is used
casually to lose weight before a big event, as well as for more
significant weight loss. It has also been offered in England for
the past year, as the KEN (or ketogenic enteral nutrition)
diet.
But isn’t the wedding diet the same as most diets? The faster you
lose the weight, and the more extraordinary the means you use to do
so, the more likely it is that you will gain it all back, plus some
more. How many of us have experience the yo-yo diet?
How about following a healthy diet, exercising, and losing weight
gradually, so that it stays off?
This kind of diet isn’t a long-term solution and losing too much
weight too fast can be physically and emotionally dangerous.
Will Feeding Tube Make This The Happiest Day Of Your Life?
But there’s another, much bigger question, that troubles me about
this fad. A wedding is just one day in a lifelong relationship –
one day that’s weighty enough in symbolism to make the bride’s size
pretty irrelevant. Isn’t it better to commit to being a couple for
the rest of your life as the person you actually are, and not some
half-starved creature who is dying to eat solids again?
For the bride hoping to make her wedding day the happiest day of
her life, the K-E diet is not the way to go.
